Tigers Stepping Out! ……

Over the last 10 years, the commitment and enthusiasm of loyal supporters such as yourselves has enabled the Tigers vision to develop into an effective and credible social work organisation. Looking back over this history is exciting and encouraging. It was in 1994 that Paul Joynson-Hicks and Matt Winn made initial contact with street boys in Kampala and formed The Tigers Football Club. The vision they had to impact the lives of the boys led to the arrival of Andy and Katina Williams in 1996 and the formation of The Tigers Club Project, a Ugandan NGO and UK charity, in 1997.

The work has expanded rapidly in the past few years, and the lessons learnt and success of our efforts to restore the lives of street children has encouraged us to explore ideas to expand the work both in Uganda and other parts of Africa.

In Uganda we plan to;

- Consider ways we might prevent children running away from home using what we have learnt to date.
- Strengthen the reintegration of children in the community either with their own families or with foster families.
- Explore the scope for increasing employment opportunities for former Tigers in partnership with other groups.
- Further empower the national staff team and increase local ownership of the work.

Beyond Uganda we plan to;

- Continue the process to establish a work amongst street children in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
- Share what we have learnt and increase the impact of our strategic approach through networking and advocacy.
- Respond to invitations in other parts of Africa where we may be able to offer fresh hope to abused and homeless children.

In short, we have embarked on an exciting new phase of growth, which has generated a need to re-consider the way we work and the roles and responsibilities of those involved including Andy who has led the organisation since 1996.

With new demands and opportunities arising from its expansion Andy's work is increasingly beyond the day-to-day responsibilities in Uganda itself. Networking, advocacy and liaison with potential partners in Uganda, the UK and across Africa are some of the wider activities that Andy deals with. These are crucial to the strategic growth of the Tigers Club Project, but require too much time from one person when combined with the duties of directing the Uganda programme and team. Therefore, the time has come to find a new director specifically for the work in Uganda who will consolidate the current activities of Tigers Club, Kampala, and spearhead new initiatives. We have recently launched the search and recruitment process for a new Uganda Project Director.

Andy writes,

"The appointment of a director for the work in Uganda will enable me to lead the Tigers Club Project effectively and with vision through the next phase of growth. I hope to be free to engage more actively in sharing the vision and developing strategy, advocacy and networking activities, represent the organisation at events and provide more focussed support and capacity building to Tigers Club teams involved in the rehabilitation and reintegration of homeless children."

Andy’s new role has been endorsed but needs defining more specifically by the Board of Trustees. We will share the outcomes of these thought process with supporters who we want to be aware of any changes and would like to ask you all to pray for;

  • The right choice, from over a hundred applications, for the new Uganda Project Director.
  • Wisdom in defining how we should work with new opportunities to expand.
  • The continuing growth and hard work of the outstanding and committed staff team in Uganda.

Thank you for your commitment and support.
