THEY HAVE MADE IT!!!!!

I'm sitting on the top of Kilimanjaro--oh yeah--
I can see a new tomorrow......
I'm sitting at the top of Kilimanjaro--oh yeah--
It fills me right down to the marrow...."
(Words from the song "Kilimanjaro" by Johnny Clegg, tape a generous loan by Kili climber Phil Davy)

6 PM UK time: We have had confirmation that most of our Kili bunch have made it and have, in effect, been "sitting at the top of Kilimanjaro" today!!!! At the end of a long day of waiting, emailing, praying and wondering, we have had that long awaited phone call from Tigers' very own Dave B , telling us that the team are safely back at Mweka Hut!!!!

Information has been sketchy and some news updates given earlier to relatives and friends who had called or emailed may well need revision at a later stage as we gain a clearer picture.. so sorry for any confusion caused, we will endeavour to give you more detailed information as we find out.

The team's hike to the summit of Africa has not been an easy one. It is a tale of courage during moments of sheer physical exhaustion, altitude and other types of sickness, a story of perseverance and camaraderie through happy as well as difficult moments. We have not disclosed all these details as we have gone along, and hope you will understand our reasons for that decision.....it would not have been fair to mention names, and we rarely had the full picture and so we thought it best not to worry any of you unnecessarily... and instead covered those who felt unwell in specific prayer.

At this very moment our Kili bunch are resting at 3100 metres altitude, recovering from their hike of a life -time and looking forward to only 2 hours of walk to their hotel tomorrow where they can relax and shower. Apparently the latter is something all of them are particularly looking forward to :-)

We are so proud of our Kili bunch--both of those who made it right to the summit, as well as of those who were unfortunate and got too ill to continue. We do not know how many did not make it to the summit-- but whoever you are-- please don't feel bad:sickness is out of our control and you have been amazing but just unlucky. We are as proud of you as we would have been if you had climbed up to the summit ten times today!

More from us hopefully tomorrow. Until then--three cheers to all relatives and friends for your support, patience, and enthusiasm, and of course to our Kili bunch. May they capture this moment in their hearts forever!

Kilimanjaro 2004

Conquer Africa’s highest mountain
and help street children conquer mountains of their own

Kilimanjaro Diary

Day 8
30th July 2004

< BackForward >

This is it---today is the day: the day which seemed so far away when our Kili team started training in the gym, on ladders, footpaths, on stairs and on the green hills of the Peak District; the day that seemed like a dream at times, a joke at others……. the day when our Kili bunch will finally reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

It is also the toughest day of the Challenge, but your thoughts and prayers will certainly give them the energy they need to overcome this very final hurdle, to keep following the guide’s lantern along the path, to continue walking up the frozen snow and scree, pausing to encourage each other, to catch their breath or simply to gaze at the starlit sky above them…only to arrive, at around 4.30 am Tanzanian time, at Stella’s Point at 5700 m altitude.

What will they feel when they get up there, as they cling to each other, as they stare, breathless and with the odd tear or two in their eyes, at the sight of this sunrise over Africa, at the colours embracing the crater rim and heights below…… Relief that they have made it up the top? Awe at the sheer beauty and grandeur of the spot which they have so bravely made their own for just a few hours? A sense of insignificance at the vast expansiveness around them, and a calling to protect a world which is so intrinsically perfect? A deeper understanding of the values of friendship, camaraderie and love, and a calling to keep giving the way they have, selflessly and whole-heartedly? A sense of deepened comprehension that life really and truly is, at its core, a tale of undiscovered potential, a song of seeds which are just waiting to emerge from the darkness, grow and flourish?

Hard to tell---and perhaps this is a blank page in our diary which we should ask each and every one of them to fill as they return to us, as we gather around a meal or a cup of tea, share stories and photos, moments of hardship and jokes ……perhaps it is a story which is only gradually going to unfold as our climbers digest the host of emotions and sensations that they must be feeling at this very moment……

…..Not far away from where they stand now, just across that border which is just a tiny line on the big map on the wall, the sun is paving its way through the misty morning clouds in Kampala, is tickling thousands of street children in their noses as they awake on the streets and prepare for another day. May those children’s hearts share the joy and hope that our climbers are now feeling; and may they gain a renewed sense of worth and achievement, and be blessed with the powerful realisation that the sky is really and truly the limit……and that, with a little help from friends all around, they, too, can reach the top and overcome mountains of their own!

Well done, you Kili climbers. We love you and are so very proud of you!!

You have done it! PTL! Brilliant!
Our warmest love and congratulations to all: leaders and led, carriers and carried; organisers and organised-- well done and all!

What emotions you have! Thanks for the strength to succeed; joy from the achievement; worship from the majestic heights; pain from the "slog" of the way; sympathy for those not with you; hope for the street boys' futures; gratitude for safety...etc

In your climbing you have developed something greater than just the personal in the group-oneness that is very special and unique. The English economist and essayist Walter Bagehot encapsulated something like it when he wrote "All nations touch at their summits"--worth a thought as you wend your ways safely downhill.

Love on behalf of us all at Tigers
