Kilimanjaro 2004

Conquer Africa’s highest mountain
and help street children conquer mountains of their own

Kilimanjaro Diary

Day 7
29th July 2004

< BackForward >

“One small (?!?!?) step for a Kili climber,
a gigantic leap for a Ugandan child”
(Pauline H., sister of our Kili-climber Christine,
on 29 July 2004)
As summit day is just the other side of another sunset, and excitement is growing both for our climbers and for all of us here, it has been so encouraging to see how many of you are thinking of the street children who will benefit from our climbers’ hiking and fundraising efforts!

In fact, each day that our team have been hiking, laughing with and supporting each other, they have also been thinking of one specific Tigers boy. They would have "met" and talked about children like 10 year old Joel whose name has been changed on this site to protect his identity and who is one of many "tigers" who have suffered abuse at home and have run to the streets of Kampala in search of a better life. Joel (also known by the Tigers team as "boy with candle" because that is how he featured on last year’s Christmas cards J) came to the Clubhouse regularly, and we met him there last summer. At that time, he was very excited because he had just been given a new, brown, baggy jumper by the Tigers team, and he was also looking forward to resettlement with a family.

Kili climber Ben M. is the man on the winning mobile network today!
He managed to text his family to let them know that he was doing fine and that the team are preparing to walk towards the summit at 11pm Tanzanian time — ie one hour earlier than originally planned!!!
A big thank you to Ben’s mum for sharing Ben’s update with us!
Today, the “Kili bunch” would have completed the rest of the hike up to Barafu Hut, which is at 4600m (15500ft) of altitude!!! From Barranco Valley and Barranco Wall, they would have hiked down into the Karanga Valley and collected water from the Karanga river, the last water collection point before summit day! We hope that the magnificent views and camaraderie in the group have fuelled them with energy both for today’s hike and for the last section of the big challenge tomorrow---the summit of Africa’s highest mountain!!!

16hrs UK time: We have had a REAL LIFE PHONE CALL" from near the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro!!!!! Karen, Ann and Dave, Tigers trustees, made a joint call to tell us that they are "really well" and about to retire to bed, ready for an 11am start (Tanzanian time) towards the summit. Dave says " we are ready to get there now".
They also sent a big thank you to you all for all the messages--Karen said her phone was going crazy with them every time she turned the phone on.... and for all your prayers . Dave said they "really felt them last night". They have had a great day's walking and sounded very chirpy.
