Kilimanjaro Diary

Day 4
26th July 2004

< BackForward >

26 tired but happy people are snuggled up in their sleeping bags at Shira Camp, hopefully wrapped up warm and protected from the chill of the night at 3800m. When today's mobile phone message crossed the miles to tell us that the Kili bunch are all well and retiring to their tents, it was only about 8 pm local time....but after 5-7 hours of strenuous walking and with the increasing altitude, an early night is well justified!

"Another good day. Everyone well albeit a bit tired from a strenuous walk and from picking up altitude. Great team, fab food even up a mountain. Views have been awesome--it's magic."
(Karen pp the group--again, she seems to have the winning mobile phone network!)

Today the climbers would have enjoyed magnificent views of the peaks of Mawenzi, Kiba and Shira, of Shira Plateau and the nearby towers and pinnacles. Having passed through a river gorge, they would have approached the Shira Plateau, where the vegetation thins out to clumps of grass, sparse bush areas and patches of bare sand and ash, reminding those who cross Kili's territory that it is, after all, a volcano they are climbing.

May the path always rise to meet them!
