Kilimanjaro Diary

Day 3
25th July 2004

< BackForward >

Today is the day our climbers have been waiting for.....the day when they finally found themselves at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro!

At 7.35 a.m. British time, a promising beep on the mobile phone proudly announced the arrival of a text message telling us that the group had reached the gates of Kilimanjaro National Park.

All well and excited, they set off on their hike along a red soil path, and passed vegetation of montane forest, along a ridge and gradually gained height as the treck merged from forest into giant heather. Having ascended 1300 m, the equivalent of Ben Nevis (!), they are now camping at the Machame Hut (3000m).

And as they settle to a good night's rest, their thoughts are, no doubt, with the Tigers boys in Kampala who, thanks to their efforts in climbing Kilimanjaro, will be able to start overcoming mountains of their own.

"We have had a great day's walk through rain forest..It is now chilling significantly as the sun goes down. All are well. Love from all". (Karen B, pp the group, in a text message of 5pm UK time)
