Sing for the World

Children from Shipley CE Primary School have been learning about Tigers Club and singing to raise money for the project.

The children learned about the Tigers Club and how football is used as a way of helping the boys to belong. We also thought about how music, like football, is a language that children the world over can understand. We spent several weeks learning songs to be recorded on a CD – songs that celebrated God’s creation, the gift of life, the fun of music, and the need to share love and look after the planet. Many of the children took part in a competition to design pictures for the cover of the CD.

On 11th July the whole school was involved in a sponsored day of song, which we called ‘Sing for the World’. The children sang together as a school, and separately in year groups, and also said prayers and read poems that expressed their hope for love to be shared in the world. They also enjoyed singing lots of their old favourites.

One of the parents kindly gave of his time and expertise to come into school and record the whole event. The songs were then recorded onto a CD with the winning pictures on the cover, and CDs were sold to parents and friends.

So far the project has raised over £525 for Tigers Club, with a further £525 for musical instruments for the school. The children really enjoyed it - and it has helped them to realise that they can use their gifts and talents to help children in another part of the world.

There are still CDs left for sale, at a price of £5. All profits from the sale of CDs are being equally split between school music resources and the Tigers Club. Anyone wishing to purchase a CD should contact the school on 01274 583900.

Our thanks go especially to Mark and Helen Johnson of ‘Out of the Ark Music’ who let us use their wonderful songs for this project.
