Advocacy and Partnerships

The Tigers Club has always worked in close partnership with local, national and international partners in order to increase effectiveness and impact. Refusing to work in isolation has resulted in collaboration and sharing experiences, lessons learned and an increase in resources at many levels.

Local Partnerships

From the outset, the Tigers Club has worked with the LOCAL AUTHORITIES in the areas in which it works. These include Kampala City Council, Local Councils, Probation and Welfare Officers, Juvenile Courts and remand homes, police and security agencies and other leaders. Advice has been sought and, where appropriate, given on issues concerning street children.

We enjoy good working relationships with LOCAL TRADERS AND ARTISANS, VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTRES AND COLLEGES, MARKET OWNERS AND BUSINESSES, where some of the boys are placed or may gain employment.

Since 1997, the Tigers Club has hosted and coordinated the INTER-NGO FORUM for organisations working directly with street children. This network aims to increase effectiveness and avoid unnecessary duplication of initiatives and experiences. Currently, twenty groups meet at least once a month. Smaller NGOs are encouraged and offered support and the Forum collaborates on specific joint ventures. Strong relationships with other NGOs have emerged from the Forum, which have led to effective referral systems and cooperation. Local and national government increasingly recognises the Forum as a reference point for work amongst street children and have asked for guidance and support on certain issues.

The Tigers Club Project works exclusively with boys. Efforts have been made to address the needs of street girls within existing programmes, but the difficulties that arose meant a better option was to partner with OASIS TRUST UK in the formation of the BAMBEJJA PROJECT for street and destitute girls. The Tigers Club offers whatever practical or technical support it can to the project.

National Partnerships

The Tigers Club Project is a registered NGO in Uganda and has gained much credibility for its work and standing in the community. We have constantly aimed to influence government policy and encourage all efforts that are in the "best interest of the child". The MINISTRY OF GENDER, LABOUR AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT has established a Street Children Desk to which we report and with which we collaborate on a regular basis. We have contributed to various publications and proposals for joint intervention on behalf of homeless children.

The Tigers Club Project is also an active member of the Kampiringisa Support Team which aims to assist the Ugandan government in its endeavours to remove children from the streets and resettle them back in their communities. The Team is made up of representatives of different organisations, all members of the Inter NGO Forum, who visit the government led Kampiringisa National Rehabilitation Centre several times a week to work closely with the staff there and to organise educational and recreational activities, counselling sessions and health awareness training for the children detained there.

In addition, we are members of CRANE (Children At Risk Action Network), an umbrella organisation for all Christian groups working with children at risk. This was facilitated by Viva Network
and brings together leaders from numerous organisations and churches.

International Partnerships

The Tigers Club Project is a member organisation of the CONSORTIUM FOR STREET CHILDREN UK. The Consortium coordinates a network for distributing information and sharing expertise around the world. It's work is firmly rooted in the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and it's efforts are focussed on building the capacity of its member agencies to work with street children and on advocacy in the field of The Rights of the Child, Poverty Alleviation and Social Exclusion.

We have a close working relationship with VIVA NETWORK both internationally and regionally with their Africa office in Kampala. Viva Network aims to "help children at risk by linking and enhancing the Christian response".

Some personnel at The Tigers Club Project are or have been seconded to us by other organisations. In particular OASIS TRUST UK, EMMANUEL INTERNATIONAL, and CMS AUSTRALIA. In addition, mission training colleges and universities have sent students either for practical training or to carry out research. Currently, we are forming partnerships with organisations in countries where Tigers Club hopes to work in the future.
